RAFT- Of Mice and Men

RAFT #1:

Reporter to George- interview on Lennie's death.

Reporter: Do you believe you did the right decision when you killed Lennie?

George: I think I did the right decision when I killed Lennie, the reason for this is the fact that the other men would've gave him a terrible death. They would've beaten him to death, or yet beaten him before shooting him. The reason why I decided to kill Lennie is because Candy had said he shouldn't have let a stranger kill his dog. I didn't want a stranger to kill my good friend Lennie. He deserved a good death, and I gave him that. I let him talk about the rabbits and all the things he liked before he died. Lennie was a good man, and it was hard for me to kill him, but it would've been harder for me to watch him die in a brutal way.

RAFT #2:

Curly's Wife to Diary. Topic: isolation and being left out.

Dear Diary,

I find it quite boring on this farm, Curly pays no attention to me anymore and I'm locked up in this house everyday. Every time I go outside Curly sends me back in. Since I get no attention from Curly I try to get attention from the other men, but they seem to have no interest in me. Curly always gets mad at other men when they talk to me, I don't think that he's aware that I'm the one trying to get their attention. I hope one day Curly sees that I'm trying to get attention from other men, then realize that I want some attention from him. I feel as if Curly just isolates me. I feel like he has no more respect for me and he pretends that I'm dead to him. He no longer talks, or looks at me like the way he used to. I'm not really the only one that gets isolated around here, there this other man by the name of Lennie. Lennie gets made fun of and ignored by the other, except for this one nice man, George. George accepts Lennie for who he is and he accepts the fact that he has a mental disability. I feel like George gets isolated sometimes, but he doesn't let it phase him. The other men are just so judgmental- for example, Curly. Sometimes I just want to run away, but if I do I'll be left with nothing. I just don't know what to do.

Love,
Curly's Wife

Weekly Blog 20

Finally, the school year is coming to an end. I've been waiting for this moment since the beginning of the semester. Yes, exams are coming up and there will be a lot of stress, but I guess I'll just pull through it. I can't wait until summer so I can just sit by the pool and relax. Instead of staying inside five days a week and listen to teachers and do work. Then weekends consist of homework and stressing out. However, during the summer my parents want me to get a job or work on the farm.. so that will kind of suck.

Above all, I'm just super excited for this school year to end and just have all these weights lifted off my shoulders. I might just cry on the day of my last exam- which is chemistry- which is also what I am completely dreading. I honestly hate chemistry more than I hate frogs... which is a lot by the way. Anyways, summer will be an awesome time, and I just can't wait.

Weekly Blog 19

One more month until my birthday, and I don't even know what I want for my birthday. I hate not knowing what I want. Ugh, birthdays are so stressful. Also, the fact that I'm turning 17 is stressful, I'M SO OLD! I honestly have no idea what I'm going to do when I turn 50, I'm going have a major midlife crisis.

Whenever I was little I'd sit in my room and think about how I'm old and going to die soon, and the fact that my parents are ancient and going to die even sooner. Man, I was one weird kid. I still hate birthdays, I always think that birthdays are going to be awesome and then when the days comes around it's always boring and crappy. Anyways, moral of this post is I hate birthdays.. and I just wasted your time ranting about it. :)

Ever wonder why there is such thing a mosquitoes? They're such a pain in the butt. Even if I wear bug spray somehow they're still attracted to me, it makes no sense. Also, whenever mosquitoes bite, it doesn't really hurt but it's extremely irritating, and then I itch it and then it gets worse. UGH I HATE MOSQUITOES!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, why... WHY is there so many mosquitoes this year?! They're all over the place, even around my house and I don't even live by a forest. Man, mosquitoes just make me so mad. Mosquito bites also stay on my legs forever and they look super gross and unattractive and make me want to cry and wear jeans for the rest of the summer. Thank god there's such thing as After Bite, because man that stuff is my best friend.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest- Chapter Summaries

Chapter 1 - 5
What does the Chief mean when he says "It's the truth even if it didn't happen"?
Chief has a mental illness, and he's essentially doesn't have a clear mind. Chief is saying that he is a trustworthy narrator, and this is for the reader to decide if he is or not. Chief doesn’t really have a mental illness, in fact he pretends he’s deaf.
How does McMurphy differ from the other patients on the ward?
McMurphy differs from the other patients because he doesn't have anyone to care about or to bring him to his knees (what Chief believes). McMurphy is very outgoing and gets “the boys” of the ward together, he’s “the life of the party”. Also, McMurphy is different because he’s in the asylum to get out of a jail sentence, unlike the other men whom actually have some sort of mental illness.

Chapter 6 - 10
Is the Doctor a friend or enemy of McMurphy? What theme is advanced by the Doctor's response to McMurphy?
I don’t believe that McMurphy and the Doctor are not really friends, but I believe that the Doctor is manipulated by McMurphy. Although McMurphy breaks the rules several times like the fishing trip, carnival, and party, the Doctor respects McMurphy and keeps him in the asylum.
Why have Chapter 10? What's its purpose?
Chapter is spent describing “the boys” playing monopoly, joking, the games goes on and on, with the boys teasing and screwing around with each other and giving each other a hard time. I believe the purpose of this chapter is to show the relationship between these men, and how they could have fun in the asylum, although it’s a horrifying place.

Chapter 11 - 15
How does McMurphy's laughter keep him safe?
I think McMurphy’s laughter keeps him sane, which mostly keeps him safe from being exactly like the people in the asylum. Also, his laughter keeps nurse Ratched out of his head, and he can laugh away the thought of her.
The irony of the Public Relation man's statement "A man that would run away from a place as nice as this, why; there'd by something wrong with him." is fairly obvious. Explain it anyway.
Why does the fog make Bromden feel safe?
What is significant about Old Rawler's method of suicide?
The significance of Old Rawler’s method of suicide is the fact that he casterated himself shows that it’s sort of like the feelings the people have towards the ward, and the feelings that Old Rawler has toward it. The ward is like li
Chapter 16 – 20
How does Cheswick's death demonstrate the influence McMurphy has over the patients?
Now that Cheswick is dead, McMurphy feels like he can now help the other patients.
In chapter 20, again with the mechanical imagery. Why?
There is mechanical imagery in chapter 20 because McMurphy has stopped being the instigator and he’s trying to get out of the ward and Ratched is in control of the patients again.
Chapter 21 - 25
What theme does the interaction between Harding and his wife reinforce?
The fact that Harding and his wife argue about who is in charge of the marriage, it shows that there is a battle of the sexes. Meaning there is actually a fight about who is the better sex. This relationship is just like the one nurse Ratched has with the men of the asylum, she kind of wants to show them that she’s the better one.
Describe the overall effect of the fishing trip on the patients.
The fishing trip benefitted the patients by allowing them to actually have fun and get the thought of being locked in an asylum out of their head. Most of the patients, including Chief value the outside civilization and how it has changed since they have been locked up in the asylum. Most of the patients have fun, but McMurphy whom is having a hard time facing his past.

Chapter 26 - 29
Why does McMurphy reject Harding's escape plan?
He rejects it because the escape seem like it’s something off of a bad robber movie.
Would you smother McMurphy?

Yes I would, to put him out of his misery.

This website was created for teachers and students. It is designed to help anyone understand anything about any subject you desire help with. It also has many great chapter summaries on “Macbeth” and “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. This website has really helped me understand the play Macbeth, since the play is not in modern English, shmoop helped me understand the modern English side of the play and understand exactly what was going on in each act and scene. Shmoop also has chapter summaries from One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, since the novel was somewhat confusing, shmoop helped me clearly understand what was going on it the book. Also, shmoop went beyond the book and let me understand what certain expressions in the book meant.

Maria Teresa Ciaffaroni. Slide Share. 18 May 2014. Nov 10 2009.
This website helped me understand Jane Eyre in a different perspective. On this website people share their own slide shows which they have made, I find this very helpful especially since I always want to see what others say about the book. Also, in this link, Lorenzo Tosti, whom made the slideshow added some great information about the book and added detailed information about the characters. This slide show on the book Jane Eyre was uploaded by a teacher by the name of Maria Teresa Ciaffaroni, whom is a Teacher of English at LGS Augusto posted this slideshow on Nov 10, 2009. The slideshow was created by Lorenzo Tosti.

Ohio University. Wired for books. April 2014.

This website was extremely useful to try to understand Macbeth since it’s an audio version. On this website, there is an audio recording of every act and scene, which was, in my opinion, very helpful. This was due to the fact that I can’t pronounce half the words in Macbeth, therefore having and audio version of the book was great because I had someone to read along with. The purpose of this website is obviously allowing students to have an audio version of Macbeth without having to read it by yourself. Sometimes some people, like me, have to hear it aloud to understand something. One thing that could be changed about this website is the ability to listen to the audio on the web page instead of having to download it.

Sparknotes. Sparknotes:Jane Eyre. May15 2012.

This source from the website "Sparknotes" was used to help create my outline for my ISU essay. Sparknotes is quite helpful to provide information on popular novels and their information and study guides provide great research for students and understand deeper thought into novels. The intended audience for Sparknotes is for students to learn and study the novels they are currently working on in school, also some teachers may use sparknotes to fully understand a novel before teaching it. What helped me the most was to be able to pick out certain things about the book to add to my outline, basically the major themes of the book.

This website was used whilst the creating of our poetry presentation on Lawrence Ferlinghetti. We mainly used this website when we were told to find some of Ferlinghetti's most popular poems and annotate/ analyze them. The point  of this website is to share some of poets most famous writings and people are able to leave comments below and share what they thing the poems means, what the main themes are, or even comment on the poem itself and share what the poem made them feel like. Also, poem hunter gives you not only the poem, but some basic background information of the poem itself. One thing this website could change is add some basic information on all of the poems they have posted.

The school year is going by too fast and it's going to give me a heart attack. Probably not, but it's stressing me out. I should really look into doing some kind of yoga. I hate the end of the year, it means assignments upon assignments, and tests upon tests. In fact, I have a biology test coming up next week and a chem test coming up the week after that, and probably an English test sometime in the next two weeks. Oh, and on top of all that Kumahor has been giving us a bunch of assignments, totally not a good time.

I just can't wait until it's all over, but I don't want to write my exams... I'm too nervous. Then grade 12, which makes me want to cry inside... I don't  want to grow up. Life is going by too fast, and I never really take the time to enjoy it.

Weekly Blog 16

The weather this week was absolutely beautiful. Finally the warm weather is coming along. The warm weather is telling us that summer is just around the corner! Honestly, this school year has gone by so fast, sometimes I still think I'm in grade 10. Don't judge me, I can tell I'm getting older. Anyways, back to the nice weather. I can't wait until it's summer and i can just be lazy and float around my pool on my inflatable chair, or go boating.

This warm weather is honestly so nice after the long bitter winter we've had, it was absolutely brutal. But, on the bright side we have nice warm weather now and it's lovely. Warm weather puts nothing but a smile on my face, actually maybe a sunburn, and maybe a some bug bites as well. Looking forward to summer 2014!

This week was pretty hectic. The school year has almost come to an end and I'm not mentally prepared for it. There's just so much to do, so many assignments, so many tests, and everything is coming too fast. On top of all that I have track and I'm missing a bunch of school and it's all so stressful.

Although this week was stressful I also had my g2 test on Wednesday and I passed. So, I'm pretty proud of myself about that. Also, I had prom Friday and that went well. I thought prom would be crappy, but I was wrong. It was actually quite fun and I'm sad it's over.

Hopefully I'll be able to survive the next couple of stressful weeks.

History Of Depression

By: Megan Koch

Depression is very common nowadays, in fact about 11% of men and 15% of women in Canada will experience some sort of depression through their lifetime. However, no one really thinks about the history of depression, and how patients were treated. Depression was previously known as melancholia. Some of the treatments used to treat melancholia were things such as Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), and Lobotomy. Electroconvulsive therapy is when seizures are electrically induced into patients. ECT is one of the fastest ways to have relief of depression. ECT is in fact still used today, it remains misunderstood by the general public. The procedure's risks and side effects are due to the misuse of equipment, incorrect administration, or improperly trained staff. Of course, in the 1950’s patients died due to improper training, but it’s quite safe nowadays and is only used if pills and other treatments don’t work. Lobotomy is one of the most gruesome treatments to cure depression, unlike ECT. Lobotomy consists of cutting or scraping away most of the connections to and from the prefrontal cortex, the anterior part of the frontal lobes of the brain. It was in America where an Irish mine worker had an iron bar javelined into the front part of his head during an explosion that actually led way to lobotomies. In a lobotomy a sharp ice pick was inserted on top the patient’s eyeballs through the orbit of the eye. Then, gruesomely enough would be moved back and forth, cutting off most connections to the brain.

Most of the gruesome treatments practiced on patients are not done today, they stopped once anti-depressants came out. Nowadays ECT is used only in severe cases, other than that therapy and anti-depressants are used. One thing that in my mind should be changed nowadays is to stop giving patients antidepressants and let them overcome their depression on their own, and only give the pills in very serious cases. Antidepressants are given to many people around the world and cause many side effects.

Journal Entries

Journal Entry #1:
October 13th, 1955

Dear Journal,

I have been put in an asylum because my parents thought I was "crazy". Just because I've been acting differently, differently as in I liked to spend time to myself and I'm always sad lately. My parents always favour my brother, Hans. Hans always does everything right, according to them. Everything I do something for my father, Hans always takes credit for it. For example, last week my father told me to fix up the old tractor that's been sitting in  the yard for years, I did so, Hans took credit for it. I told my father Hans had been lying, but then I was slapped across the face and my father yelled "Why can't you be as truthful as Hans?" So, I've been feeling kind of down, and I always feel sad.

Love, Josef

Journal Entry #2:
July 12th, 1964

Dear Journal,

It's almost been 10 years, 10 years in this dreadful place. They treat me like a pile of crap, the nurse Helga beats me everyday. She always tells me to cheer up. I just can't and when I try to be happy for once, I just think about the old times and get upset all over again. Helga is nasty, I'm her patient, she could at least try to be nice to me. It seems like all these nurses think us, the patients, are contagious or something. My parents haven't come to visit, ever. It's like they don't even care about me anymore, they treat  me as if I were dead. I don't know why though, I asked Helga why my parents won't come visit it me and she told me it's because "I'm insane". I'm 27 now, I should be married and have my own child and taken over the family farm. I bet Hans has a great life because he's like an only child now.

I really don't like it here in the asylum, I find being locked up here makes me feel crazier. Some of the men here are very scary, they just sit there and laugh at you. Some of them get really mad, and start beating you up for no reason. I just want to go home, as bad as it was, it was better than where I am now.

Love, Josef

Journal Entry #3:
December 10th, 1975

Dear Journal,

It's been 20 years, still no sight of my parents. Helga and the other nurses are no long here, I'm quite happy about it. The nurses we have now aren't that bad, they don't treat me as if I were contagious anymore. They found out that I actually have a mental illness named depression. Depression is an illness that affects ones mood. It makes you feel hopeless, anxious, empty, worried, etc.
I guess the reason why I have depression is the fact that I never felt loved, and I never got any attention. I wrote a letter to my parents explaining what's actually wrong with me, and I still haven't gotten a reply. It's been 2 months. I just want my parents to love me and not think that I was contagious, in fact depression happens to many people.

Unfortunately, there's no cure to depression... yet. I hope before I die, there will be a cure. I just want to be happy again.

Love, Josef

Journal Entry #4:
October 14th, 1985

Dear Journal,

30 years and one day. Finally, I'm starting to get cured. There's this lady i go talk to everyday, her name is Nadia. She's actually very nice and she helps me overcome what I have gone through in these past couple of years. I was told my parents had passed away, too bad I couldn't talk to them one last time. I'm 46 now, and I was put in an asylum when I was 16. Hans came to visit me one day and said sorry, and he had given a note that my mother had wrote on her death bed. She claimed she was sorry and a bunch of other crap. But, I actually wanted to hear a real sorry, one that she really meant. She could have just written something. I've been isolated for several years because I was "crazy". I'm going to bed in rehab for the next month then I'll be living with Hans and I'll try to find a job.

Love, Josef

Journal Entry #5:
June 16th, 1990

Dear Journal,

I've been living with Hans for the past couple of months, and they've found a cure for depression. I've become happier due to my pills called "anti-depressants" and with the help of my therapist, Nadia. Nadia helped me overcome my fears and she made me feel happier. Nadia was much better than the nurses I had at the asylum, every day at the asylum was pure hell, and I didn't have enough food. I was skinny and weak, but I am finally better and living a happy life. I met this wonderful woman by the name of Maria, she has her own farm and she too was in an asylum for years for depression. That brought us closer and we are to get married next summer. I'm happy I'm living such a great life, and I have to thank everyone whom had found a cure for depression.

The Process

Explore the Mental Health History Timeline, especially noting changes that occurred in the 50 years since McMurphy's death.

Mental Health History:
  • People with mental health issues were locked up in Asylums, whilst trying to fix the issue by proceeding gruesome and terrifying experiments on the patients.
  • Mental health was seen as a bad thing, and people feared it.
  • In the 20th century there were many insane Asylums.
  • Funding was often cut for Asylums, and many patients starved to death.
  • In Nazi Germany over 200, 000 people with a mental health disorder were put to death, their deaths received little historical attention.
  • Not many treatments for mental health.
Changes in Mental health 50 years after McMurphy’s death:
  • People have become more aware of mental health issues.
  • More funding for mental heath research provided by the government
  • Techniques to treat patients are far from being as horrifying as back then.
  • Students learn about mental health in school.
  • Treated as a normal disease, can happen to anyone.
  • Lots of treatments for mental health.
Explore the history of one particular hospital thorough David H. Clark's article, "The Story of a Mental Hospital: Fulbourn, 1858-1983," again, taking particular note of the period between the late 1950's and the present.
FULBOURN, 1858-1983
Then:
  • Lack of funding, patients starved.
  • Abusing patients.
  • No therapy, no real treatment.
  • Treated as if they were contagious or lower than others.
Now:
  • Many treatments available for mental health issues, such as pills, and therapy.
  • Human rights, no abusing patients.
  • Treated as normal human beings.
  • Lots of funding for mental health.

Learn about the practice of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT).
  • Electroconvulsive Therapy is electrically induced causing a seizure.
  • Used to "treat" depression and mania.
Learn more about the practice of Lobotomies.
  • Lobotomies are when there is cutting or scraping into the skull, then breaking connections to the brain.
Read about the practice of Institutionalization, taking special note of changes and/or progress over time.
  • Patient numbers dropped to sudden deaths.
  • Nowadays such thing wouldn't happen due to our treatments available.

Finally the warm weather has come. Although I have a massive sunburn on my face, I'm still loving this weather. It's starting to feel like summer, and hopefully this nice weather is here to stay. I was dreading the cold weather and long winter, it was horrible. I like to be in the warmth.

Apparently next week it's supposed to rain all week, which is kind of a buzz kill because this whole week has been beautiful. Especially Friday, which ended with a massive thunderstorm. Although I hate thunderstorms, they come along with warm weather. So, I guess they're not that bad.

So far this week has been pretty boring, but the rest of the week is going to be pretty busy. This is because we have track, which means I'll be missing a lot of school. Honestly, I hate missing school.. it sucks. Anyways, then I have a chemistry test Friday, which I'm EXTREMELY nervous about.

On top of all that, I have to read two books for enlish at the same time which is completley trowing me off. Honestly, I have started reading the first couple chapters of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which is not my type of book at all. The book makes no sense what so ever to me, so I have no idea how I'm going to read that book. Then, I've been reading Jane Eyre for my ISU, honestly I love that book so much.. it's addicting. I thought I'd never like a book so much in my life.

So, Easter weekend was pretty good. I got to see everyone, and as usual EVERYONE in my family teased me. I just don't get why people always have to tease me like gosh. Anyways, on Easter my sister and I successfully found the baskets full of chocolate that the Easter bunny hid, aka my parents. Then, later on that day the whole Koch side of the family came over, excluding Patricia who was stuck in Toronto for the weekend.

Later on that day, I was still stuck with my family.. ugh. I love my family and everything, but man my younger cousins are just so annoying and childish. Like, I'm 16 going on 17, I do not want to go play with you. After most of the people had left, my aunt and uncle including my cousin from Switzerland stayed for a while, then we watched old family videos. Old videos are always my favourite, and embarassing at the same time. You always get to realize how stupid you used to act and look as a kid. Yet again it's nice to just laugh at everyone, still to this day my uncle video tapes every family gathering.

Family, lots of food, and fun. I'm so excited for Easter. I love getting together with my Canadian family because my uncle used to be a Chef and we always have the best food. Although I'd love to spend an Easter with my Swiss family, getting together with my Canadian family is pretty great. At least one of my cousins from Switzerland will be joining us this year.

The best part of Easter is waking up in the morning and eating to colourful and decorated eggs, then going outside to have an "Eater Basket Hunt". This is a family tradition where the "Easter Bunny" aka mom goes and fills big baskets full of chocolate, candy, and other things such as movies or so on. Then she hides then and you have to search the whole property for them. Finding the baskets is the hardest part, this is because our property is extremely big and we have a bunch of buildings.

Anyways, I'm extremely excited for Easter weekend and I'm excited to see my family, and eat... a lot.

Don't you just love cats? They're just so cute and cuddly. The only thing I hate is when they lose all their furr on you, like I can't wear black around my cat. Cats are just a fluffy ball of love, when I'm sad my cat comes and cuddles with me. Cats are just so cute, just the way they look at you with their head tilted, omg just too cute.

Sometimes cats can be mean. For example, my cat attacks me whenever he doesn't get full attention, he's a spoiled brat. I just love buying stuff for my cat, it's just so cute. I also enjoy dressing up my cat, for example, on Christmas I dress him up in a Santa outfit. Yeah, he doesn't like it at all.. but I do, so that's all that matters.

But, overall cats are just so cute and cuddly. I love my cat so much although he annoys me. BY THE WAY  I AM NOT A CRAZY CAT LADY!

Unit 2 Activity 2.5- The Play Itself (summative)

Task: For each of the Acts below, choose a scene (any scene) fill in your understanding of the setting, background and characterization. By background I mean information and topics the actors should really know if they are to give a good performance. I've indicated in a general way the sort of background information you’d need for Act III. Yours, of course, will be much more specific. Post your responses in the portfolio section of your blog.

Act I, Scene I

Setting: The setting is outdoors, due to the thunder, lightning and rain. You get a feel that it's in a private area where there's not many/ no people around. Most likely an area that has a scary feel to it, for instance a grave yard or a forest with many dead trees.

Background: Some background you may know is witchcraft, and the fact that during the Elizabethan era people believed that witches were the cause of unlikely and horrendous events.

Characterization: For this particular scene, the characters should be aware of the witches and how gruesome and manly looking they are. They are responsible for numerous series of acts that take place. The witches will also have weird voices, long chins, and lots of warts (the stereotypical look).

What's up with this crappy weather? It's spring. It's time for the snow to leave. I'm so sick of this snow, it's been here since like November... it's so dumb. Like the snow can just leave after March. Every morning it's always super cold, then I hate my life 10000 times more as I wait for the bus in the morning. I just want to wear t-shirt and shorts and not all this heavy clothing.

The snow was fun at first, I could go skiing and staking and all that fun stuff. But, now it's just too cold for too long, and I'm starting to get sick of skiing almost every weekend.I like the snow and all, but this winter has been extremely long. Winter should start a week before Christmas until end or mid- March.

I'm honestly so sick and tired of this cold weather and I"m sick of being sick. Being sick sucks so much, I hate coughing and having a stuffy nose 24/7. Canada is a great country and all, but it's too cold.

This is debate week, it's finally come. Alicia, Michelle, and I were extremely nervous and had worked hard on this debate for the past week. So, we get to English class, we have all our points and bam, turns out we had researched the wrong topic. What a piss off. I was so mad. I wanted to cry, honestly I could feel tears swelling up in my eyes.

So, the next day we came back after a night of hard work and re-doing everything, and we lost. After, all that hard work and arguing we lost. We put so much effort into it and we friggen lost. This was honeslty the worst feeling ever. But, whatever we just laughed it off afterwards, and we had a great time.

Overall, the debate went pretty well, and I raised my voice at Summer. I started full out yelling at her, which felt prettty great. According to many people, it was scary, but hey, little people can be scary sometimes.

I signed up for track and field this week, yeah I'm as surprised as everyone I tell. I hate Alicia for making me sign up for the stupidest things. I already signed up for school hockey because of her and nearly died. Anyways, I have no idea what events I'm going to do.

First practise was Monday night, we had to do circuits. Yeah, circuits on the first night, it was hell. I had spinning class just before track, I was dead when I got home. I just crashed. On and on top of all that I had to do stairs for 20 minutes, yeah most of us slacked off and started walking up and down the stairs instead of running.

Needless to say I'm not excited for practises every Monday, and Wednesday.

Class at War, RDHS’ Debate Season

On Friday, March 21st 2014, there was a debate held in Mr. Murray’s English at Rockland District High School in room 228. The debate topic was “Did the Witches set up Macbeth?” On the affirmative side were James Stewart, Amy Balaton, and Christina Nyentap, and on the negative side were Thomas Keith, Matt Rossi, and Brennen Beattie.

The debate started off with a three minute introduction for each side. Then came their first argument which they had five minutes for. The affirmative side started. Christina Nyentap had an awesome starting argument followed by a “Debate wedgie” as said by Murray. What she had done was screenshot a picture of the opposing Thomas Keith’s blog admitting that the witches did setup Macbeth. After that, came Thomas, he stated that Lady Macbeth took advantage of Macbeth. Afterwards was the rebuttal, which is also 5 minutes, both sides had great rebuttals against one another.  Thomas then came back at Christina for what she had done. Then came the second argument, Amy then talked about witchcraft and how it played a big factor throughout the play, then explaining why the witches set up Macbeth. Afterwards Brennen shared his argument, he explained how the witches could see the future and they knew what was bound to happen to Macbeth. Then the free-for-all, the most interesting part of every debate, there were a lot of voices raised, and many people from the crowd started getting rowdy, especially Summer Macwha. Then it was time for the last arguments, James coming for the comeback with how the witches all connected in the killings. Matt then had his point saying that the witches were just a fantasy, they were not real. After the debate Murray himself said “The arguments were strong on both sides” which was true both sides had very strong effective arguments.

After anxiously waiting, the judges came back in the room to share who had won. They claimed that the negative side had won. Judge Austin said “The negative side had short, but effective points”. Being one of the reasons why they won. Judge Sara claimed that the affirmative side kept rebutting the negative side’s rebuttals, which is not allowed in a debate. After the debate, Liyana Rudeen said “Affirmative side should have won, they had good points and even better arguments”. Affirmative sides Amy Balaton said “I felt it went very well both sides had strong points and a very thought out argument, I wish I just got to finish and say my conclusion before I was buzzed out, but all and all I thought it was a very close debate”. But, according to the judges, the negative side had won fair and square.

I honestly thought I'd have so much time on March Break. But, no. I have to go back to school tomorrow. Like, I REALLY don't want to go to back to school. That means we're closer to mid-terms, and that means closer to exams.

Honestly, all it feels like I did on this break was do my homework. I had way too much homework, like Kumahor went crazy on us, and then I had to study for a biology text, and start my debate for English. All things I really didn't want to do, but I knew I had to.

Just thinking about going to school tomorrow makes me want to cry. Oh, and the fact that I had drivers ed yesterday from 9-3, and today again from 9-3 makes me want to rip my eyeballs out. Sitting there for 6 bloody hours makes me want to cry, or maybe it makes me cry, anyways. This was by far the crappiest March Break ever.

Have you ever watched the Oscars, and noticed that Leonardo gets nominated for all the movies he's in? You sit there with your fingers crossed that he'll finally win an Oscar, but he still doesn't. There's nothing that pisses me off more than the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio never gets Oscars. Great Gatsby, Titanic, Django Unchained, and The Wolf of Wall Street. These are all 4 of Leo's biggest movies. Have you ever just sat there and wondered why?

I really want to know who gets to pick who wins the Oscars, like Leo has definitely deserved an Oscar. The fact that he's NEVER gotten one, is just mind blowing. Like, Rose got an Oscar for Titanic.. I'm pretty sure Leonardo was the better actor in that movie. As well as the Great Gatsby, just the way he plays is characters is amazing. The fact that he didn't even win an Oscar for The Wolf of Wall Street makes me want to cry, that was the best movie ever (in my opinion).

The fact that Leo is an amazing actor, as said by many, and never has gotten an Oscar is mind blowing. Who ever picks who wins the Oscars is an ass, and I hate them. Leo deserves and Oscar, and they're just jealous of how amazing he is.

Journal Entries

1. Many stage productions of MacBeth omit Act I scene i. Is this scene necessary? How  does it prepare us for important themes in the play? What is the effect of this scene's setting? What does the line "Fair is foul, and foul is fair" (line 10) mean?

In the play MacBeth, directors keep omitting the scene of act 1 scene i, but however, Act 1 scene i, this scene is importiant. First off, if it wasn't, shakespeare wouldn't have put it in the book, and secondly, this secene draw the audiences attention. They start wondering who the witches are. The effect of this scene's setting is again, getting the audiences attention, the scene is about the witches talking and it gets poeple wondering why there's witches. Witches are bad, why are they in this play? What I believe "Fair is foul, and foul is fair" means is that Good is bad, and bad is good. What I thinks this means it's like the yin and yang symbol, the black part is bad and the white is good. But, in the black there's a white dot, which is the good in the bad. For the white side, there's a black dot, which is the bad in the good. What I'm trying to say with this is there's good in every bad person and bad in every good person.

2. For questions 2-4, consider the classical definition of tragedy from Aristotle's Poetics: a drama about a noble hero with a tragic flaw that causes his/her downfall. The tragic hero's fate evokes pity and terror and creates a catharsis (an emotional release or purging) for the audience.Describe MacBeth's character. Is he completely a villain? Does he have a conscience? What are his admirable qualities? What do the wounded captain's comments (I. ii.) reveal about MacBeth's character? What is his tragic flaw? Is MacBeth aware of his flaw?

Macbeth is brave, he's a Scottish general that gets wicked thoughts from three witches. Macbeth isn't a villain, he only seems like one because of what the witches do to him. He also seems quite curious because of the fact that he does what the witches tell him. He has conscience, when the witches tell him something he gets curious then does whatever is said.  Macbeth's admirable qualities are his loyalty to the towns people, and to the king and his friends. He's also ambitions because of the fact that he wants the titles the witches call for him. Macbeth wounded captain's comments are the fact that Macbeth is courageous, and he never gives up, although it may be a tough task. Macbeth's tragic flaw is the fact that the witches have completely taken over his head and Macbeth wants these higher titles. Macbeth is aware of his flaws, this is because of the fact that Macbeth keeps going for what he wants, no matter if people have to die because of it.

3. A tragic hero should provoke our sympathy. Do you sympathize with MacBeth? Why or why not? Does his downfall evoke pity and terror? Does he fit Aristotle's definition of a tragic hero?

As Shakespeare wrote this play, the main thing all writer do is make you sympathize the main character. As Macbeth is the main character, I do sympathize him. I sympathize Macbeth because of him wanting more, although he already has everything. His downfall surely evokes pity and terror, this is because Macbeth is extremely greedy, he always wanted more, which led to it not being Macbeth's fault, then you feel pity for him. This is all mostly Lady Macbeth's fault, she pretty much forces/ brainwashes Macbeth into killing the King. Once he kills the King, Macbeth is terrified, and you feel extremely bad for him. You also feel terror as he kills the King, all you can think is "What's going to happen to Macbeth?" or "Can he actually keep this a secret, or will he get caught?". Macbeth fits Aristotle's definition of tragic hero because he had one flaw, which was his ambition. He was a man of higher standings, but still wanted more. His one flaw sent Macbeth to his downfall, which then lead to Macbeth eventually dying. He dies because he realized the mistakes he had made and said he would take his life in return.

4. What are the forces that determine MacBeth's destiny? To what degree are the witches responsible for MacBeth's downfall? What roles do fate and free will play in MacBeth's destruction?

The forces that determine Macbeth's destiny are the witches, Macbeth's greed, and lady Macbeth. The witches were fully responsible to Macbeth's downfall, because they were the ones that told Macbeth he can have more, and be King. Then, lady Macbeth liked the idea of Macbeth becoming king, and she brainwashed Macbeth into killing Duncan. Then, there was Macbeth's greed that played along with this, he wanted to rule the kingdom, he wanted to be king. The roles that free will and fate play in Macbeth's destruction are that Macbeth was brought down by his own ambition, therefore being free will. Macbeth wasn't forced into making these decisions, but he was sort of brainwashed by his greediness and lady Macbeth. So, it was more free will than fate.

5. Blood is mentioned over 100 times in MacBeth. What are the most significant references to blood in the play? As a psychological symbol, what does blood represent for MacBeth and Lady MacBeth?

In my opinion, the most significant references to blood in the play are when Macbeth sees blood all over his hands and dagger after killing Duncan, then Lady Macbeth has blood all over her hands and she constantly rubs them trying to get the blood off. What I believe that blood represents for Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are, for Macbeth's (having the blood on his hands and dagger), to me the blood symbolizes the guilt that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth feel after the killing of Duncan. Since the blood on Lady Macbeth's hands cannot be washed away, I believe it represents the fact that the killing of Duncan can't be undone, and that both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth both feel guilty, because they had killed Duncan due to their greed.

6. How are storms, omens, and prophecies used as psychological symbols in the play?

Storms in the play are used as psychological symbols whenever the witches are shown, this is due to the fact that it creates mysterious, and dark feelings. The storms symbolize that something bad is bound to happen, or something bad is happening. Omens are used as psychological symbols whenever something bad is going to happen as well. An example of an omen is when Macbeth imagines the dagger. Omens are usually a phenomenon predicting the future. Prophecies are used by the witches throughout the play, which is the main cause for Macbeth's downfall. Prophecies use visions, whether they're real or not and they pass on knowledge. Without all these elements throughout the play, Macbeth wouldn't be the character he is.

7. Discuss the following characters as doubles of Macbeth: Duncan, Malcolm, Banquo, the Thane of Cawdor, and the King of England. How would you compare each character to Macbeth? If we interpret these characters as reflections of various facets of Macbeth's personality, what facet would each character represent?

Duncan- Macbeth is actually a good man until he makes a bad decision. They are alike due to the fact that they are both kings in this play and they are both show pride in who they are. Macbeth and Duncan have different personalities due to Duncan being older and Macbeth being a younger man. Both men are born in nobility, but later on in the play Macbeth is not noble anymore. If Duncan were part of Macbeth's personality I think it would be his nobility.
Malcolm- they both fight for what they believe in, and they also both have equal rights to become king after the passing of Duncan, and nothing is stopping them from becoming king. Both have ambition, courage, and greed to some sort of degree. If Malcolm were a part of Macbeth's personality I believe he would be Macbeth's ambition. Due to them both having high ambition.
Banquo- Macbeth becomes king and Banqo's children will become king as well. This shows Macbeth's nobleness because he's noble to his relatives, before and after he had killed Duncan, not during. Banquo and Macbeth are similar due to the fact that they both believed in the witches prophecies. If Banquo were a part of Macbeth's personality, I believe he would be his naivety, because both of them believed in the witches prophecies.
Thane of Cawdor- Thane of Cawdor betrayed his king, as did Macbeth. Macbeth took his position as Thane of Cawdor. The Thane of Cawdor got hung after he was called a traitor. Macbeth was also somewhat a traitor, due to him betraying king Duncan. I believe if the Thane of Cawdor were a part of Macbeth's personality, it would be his traitorism.
King of England- Due to Macbeth's ambition, he will do anything in his power. As does the king of England, because he wants to serve his country with pleasure. If the King of England were part of Macbeth's personality it would be his ambition.

8. Consider the use of the dream/sleep motif in Macbeth. Bad dreams and disturbed sleep often represent psychological turmoil. What examples of disturbed sleep do you find throughout the play? What do Lady Macbeth's dreams in the famous sleepwalking scene (V. i.) reveal about her character?

An example of disturbed sleep throughout the play is when Macbeth dreams about Banquo's son coming after Macbeth, killing him, and taking the crown from him. Macbeth then becomes restless, then sends men off to go kill Banquo and his son. Also, another example of bad dreams in the play "Macbeth" is when Lady Macbeth sleepwalks in the scene (V.i). What this reveals about her character is that she's restless, probably because of the fact that she can no longer sleep due to the fact that Macbeth is a guilty man for killing all these people and no one knows the truth about Macbeth.

9. What is the purpose of the Porter scene (II. iii. 1-45)? Does it seem out of place in the play? How does this comic scene reflect the play's darker themes?

The purpose of the Porter scene is to make people in the audience laugh, it was used for humor. To me, the scene doesn't seem out of place in the play because it makes the audience aware of the devil and hell. This scene reflects on the play's darker themes because it again talks about hell and the devils, and it's humorous due to the fact that Shakespeare wanted a different mood to be set other than suspense and fear throughout the play.

This week was honestly complete shit. Stressing out for our English presentation, then my bio quiz, and then on top of that trying to study and understand everything in chemistry for the upcoming test next Monday. I guess the English presentation went well. We were the first ones to present., so we didn't really know what to expect. But, I think we did pretty good considering the fact that we didn't know what we were doing.

Then there was the biology quiz and baby projects that we due. The baby project was a project (obviously) that we had to pick a partner and make a baby with them (not a real baby). Anyways, we had figured out how our baby would look like according to our genes and what not and the baby didn't look like me at all. It was black, I had a black baby. I wanted a cute blonde hair and blue eyes baby, but whatever. I mean I'm not trying to be racist but come on, how cute is blonde hair and blue eyes? So, I had to make a whole scrapbook for this project and it took me 4 hours... I was so pissed off. While I was making this scrapbook I also had to study for a bio quiz. I was stressing a la max.

Next problem of the week was chem. I had to do a chem lab, and there was a quiz which Kumahor never marked so I don't know what I'm doing. Honestly, I would drop chem if I could, but I don't want to close any doors. I hate how I'm practically forced to make the decision on what I want to do for the rest of my life right now. Like I'm 16, I don't even know what clothes to put on in the morning.

So this Friday (February 21st) we're supposed to play Vankleek Hill at our tournament at Clarence creek arena. Everyone's been waiting for this moment. This is because there's rivalry between the two schools. Girls on the RDHS team started making game plans on who they want to hit on the VCI team, which is quite funny if you ask me. I'm sure VCI was doing the same.

However, Friday came around AND IT WAS A SNOWDAY. Honestly, I was so mad. We've been waiting to play VCI since December and it's a friggen Snowday?! Now we have to wait until March 4th to play them, and apparently VCI can't make it on that day.

Apparently there's a boys make up tournament on the same week, hopefully SMurray will change the dates so VCI can make it. Honestly, if we have to wait until next year to play them I'll be so mad. Plus, the girls on our "hit list" are graduating this year. Also, girls school hockey is non-contact so this is going to be a pretty interesting game. Honestly, being nice is not an option during this tournament.

Weekly Blog 2

Waking up early, tired, and having the same meals every day. This is because my mom left to Switzerland for two weeks, so it's just my dad and I. Honestly, I've never been so sick of frozen pizzas and pasta. Once there was no more frozen pizzas in the freezer I was extremely happy. All I could think to myself was "Yes, no more frozen pizzas for dinner!" But, one day I came from school to realize my dad stacked up on frozen pizzas, the freezer was pretty much stuffed with frozen pizzas. I was sooooo mad, and the sad part is, my dad gets excited whenever we eat pizza. "Yes! Now we get to eat our Canadian pizza and tomorrow we'll eat the Chicken Deluxe one!" All I can think to myself when he says that is "I hate my life" or "I can't wait until mom comes home."

Oh, and that's not the worst of it. Every morning he would make eggs for breakfast. But, no sometimes I'd be making pasta for dinner and my dad would ask "Can we make eggs too?!" Like no dad. First off that's disgusting and secondly I'm tired of eating eggs every morning thank you very much. Another thing that pisses me off is when I make dinner and my dad praises me, he says things like "wow Megan this is so good, I can't believe you made this."  or "Why are you so good at cooking?". He honestly treats me like a handicapped person, like oh yeah dad, I'm really incapable of putting pizza in an oven and setting a timer, it's not like it says exactly what to do on the back of the box.

On top if all that, my dad wakes me up 20 minutes earlier than my mom usually does. If I'd try to say in bed a bit longer, he would come in my room and literally drag me out of bed. The only good part of it is that my dad still makes my lunches every day, and also the fact that he lets me sleep in his king sized bed while I make him sleep in my tiny twin bed. Also, I barley have to do anything around the house and I don't get annoyed all the time, except for when my sister is home.

Unit 1 Activity 1.9

Task 1: Read the conversation below, then write down what you think the Cockney Rhyming Slang words mean. Its written twice, once as it was really said, and then with the whole rhyme to make it easier to understand. Write a Canadian English translation on your blog.

"I'm gonna be late back to the gates tonight. Me and me ole chinas are goin' out for a few pig's. I won't be back for Joe, and as long as I stay off the Jack I won't get Elephant's and start readin'. I 'ope this bus gets 'ere soon, this Andy's running down me bushel ... if I'm not careful I'm gonna catch a Cheltenham."

"I'm gonna be late back to the gates of Rome tonight. Me and me ole china plates are goin' out for a few pig's ears. I won't be back for Joe Skinner, and as long as I stay off the Jack Dandy I won't get Elephant's trunk and start readin and writin'. I 'ope this bus gets 'ere soon, this Andy Cain's running down me bushel and peck - if I'm not careful I'm gonna catch a Cheltenham Bold."

Canadian English Translation:
"I'm going to be late tonight. My friends and I are going out for a couple of beers tonight. I won't be back for dinner, and as long as I stay off the Jack Daniels I won't get drunk and start fighting. I hope this bus gets here soon, this rain is running down me from head to toe- if I'm not careful I'm going to catch a cold.

Task 2: It's now time for you to invent your own Rhyming Slang. You are going to have to write out a short script (Cockney Rhyming Slang is a spoken dialect). First, write down ten words associated with teenage life - these can be school words, words to do with hobbies etc. You should get a list with things like this: teacher, homework, television (TV), pen, friends, party... and so on.

1. Party- silly smarty
2. Soccer-  hard Rocker
3. Pen- smelly hen
4. Teacher- nasty creature
5. Homework- House work
6. Phone- From Rome
7. Hockey- very cocky
8. Twitter- really bitter
9. Food- very rude
10. Bus- a fuss

Task 3: Now write down the names of 5 of your friends and 5 of your teachers. No insults!

1. Alexis- the sexiest
2. Michelle- from hell
3. Elias- is rebellious
4. Matt- Fat Cat
5. Amy- The lamey (not an insult if Amy calls herself this)
6. Mr. Barton- milk carton
7. Mr. Harry- is scary
8. Mr. Murray- The Furry
9. Ms. Smith- the locksmith
10. Ms. Bird- Who heard

Summative Task: Now that you have practiced making up slang you are ready to make up your script. Imagine you and your best friend can only speak in rhyming slang, but have to go and see one of your school's scariest teachers, and explain why you have not handed in your homework assignment! Make your excuses as wild as possible, inventing new rhyming slang if you need to. Don't forget to follow the rules for writing a script ... ask your teacher if you are unsure.

Mr. Murray: Elias and Matt, where is your project?

Elias: My hen broke and I couldn't write down ideas, then I asked a creature for a new one and they didn't have a hen.

Matt: Then we tried to finish our neglect after school but we didn't have vapor, a hen, or a scooter to finish it!

Ms. Barton: You guys should both have dimensions for not having your neglect handed in on time!

Matt: Carton and Furry, we are so sorry!

Elias: Please forgive us, we will have our neglect handed in by 11:30 today!

My. Murray: Okay, cat and rebellious, this is a morning, next time you'll both get dimensions!

Matt and Elias: Thank you very much, Furry!

Glossary:
